The Women’s Institute (WI) was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and to encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then the organisation’s aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK. The WI celebrated its centenary in 2015 and currently has over 220,000 members in around 6,300 WIs.The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.

Oakham Afternoon W.I (oakhamafternoonwi) has around 40 members and welcomes women of all ages. It is a fairly new WI being formed in 1999 - see the news reports below.   We have a regular monthly meeting normally with a speaker - see our meeting programme.  We also enjoy a chat, tea and of course a slice of cake.

 Do come and visit us.

Oakham Afternoon WI belongs to the Horseshoe group with W.I.s from Cottesmore, Greetham, Oakham and Whissendine.

Group meetings are held, normally with speakers every Spring and Autumn which all group members can attend.

This gives an enjoyable opportunity to meet members from other local W.I.s.

Pennies for Friendship are collected on behalf of the Associated CountryWomen of the World. ACWW is the international charity supported by the WI movement.  It is the largest international organisation for rural women. It has a uniquely down-to-earth approach offering mutual support, friendship and practical help to its members.

The ‘pennies’ that we collect are sent to the Leicester and Rutland Federation of WIs who in turn pass on the pennies received from all their WIs to ACWW.

This year we are supporting  fisherwomen in South India and victims of domestic abuse in Romania.

So if your purse seems full of coppers when you arrive at WI, tip them into our pot and make a difference to a woman’s life.
